09/10/16 UPDATE

Upgraded the GPU to EVGA GTX 950 ACX 2.0 from a recent Newegg rebate offer for $100.00

I built this 1080p gaming rig as an anniversary gift to my girlfriend. I actually built the computer 3-4 months ago, but never got around publishing the build until now.

I chose the Haswell refresh platform prior to Skylake because I already had spare DDR3 ram lying around and I wanted to keep to a budget of $500 for the core components.

Feel free to comment on the component selection. I scoured $D and /buildapcsales for months to find the best deals at the time.

Part Reviews

Great processor for 1080p gaming and heavy multitasking for media consumption.

Basic mobo for standard features. USB 3.0 front header is useful as well.

Great ram, no issues with timings.

Great SSD for quick boot times. 240 GB is ample space for OS and a couple games.

Pulled hard drive from an old refurbished laptop that I had lying around.

Video Card

PCPP does not have the specific model listed on the site, PN: 12 02G-P4-1953-KR which includes the passive ACX 2.0 cooler.

This can play her favorite games at 1080p at 60+ FPS.

This case was very user-friendly to assemble the components together. Great cable management. Side window is a plus to show off the clean build.

Power Supply

This PSU might be overkill, but I did not skimp on the power supply in case she wants to upgrade the CPU/GPU in the future.

Operating System

Automatic upgrade to Windows 10

Great budget monitor that I purchased on sale. Matte finish is easy on the eyes.

Cherry MX Blue switches are tactile and very loud. Great feedback for gaming.

That PSU could literally power that CPU and 10 750tis but whatever works. Enjoy the PC!

Thanks for the OC tip. I have another OC build using the Intel Pentium G3258 stable OC to 4.5 GHz with an aftermarket air cooler. The performance gain for the price is great.
