Description

I needed another computer for CPU-intensive work. I will eventually buy a new desk, screen, mouse, and keyboard, but for now I use a KVM switcher (mouse-keyboard ONLY) and use my monitor's input switch to switch between inputs (DVI or VGA) since the KVM is VGA only and VGA really sucks (blurry). So I at least have one computer coming through DVI for now.

I wanted as small a case as practically possible because I might be traveling with it one day.

Has room for a graphics card. Adding one will instantly turn it into a great gaming rig.

Went for 1x8 GB because I need lots of RAM for work, and I can upgrade to 16GB easily, otherwise I would have went for 2x4.

Oh yeah, $600 budget!

BTW, there's a black box very very faintly visible in the "final build pic" (first). That's my expensive subwoofer... so my music can go "oomph oomph" in the night. Cooler master case is smaller than my subwoofer, haha!

Build Tips: Install PSU LAST!!! Zalman cooler guide is really *ing confusing, use youtube. Zalman cooler comes with thermal paste. Raidmax is pretty quiet! My wireless USB receiver didn't fit on the KVM switch with a VGA cable also attached (using my montitor as the video switch instead)

REPLY TO COMMENTS: Yeah, I didn't know what Z97 was, have been out of the computer building scene for a while and thought H97/Z97 was just a model name... yeah I meant to post my parts lists to the forum for double checking, but it slipped my mind, dam.

Nice little build mostly with some great parts, but I'll have to echo the other comments: that PSU is a time-bomb. I understand budgets and all, but you may want to strongly consider a higher quality PSU before you consider a new desk, monitor, mouse, and/or keyboard, especially since you'll be doing intense work. A new desk can't nuke your parts or potentially set your house on fire, but a cheap PSU can.

Here's another useful link to a tier list, this in jpeg format. http://i.imgur.com/tgrbCnr.jpg

Quick issues noted:

1.) Raidmax power supplies are bad, bad, bad. I'd highly suggest replacing it or risk frying your computer.

2.) k series CPU with a H97 motherboard. Since you can't overclock with the board, you could have saved money going with a non-k model. Also since overclocking isn't an option, stock cooling could have been used, saving more money.

3.) If you need lots of RAM for work, I would have gone 16gb right away (savings from 2 would have paid for it). At least it won't be hard to upgrade; good planning on your part. ;) .

Other than that, fairly decent build. I can't do a +1 though since some choices made would need part replacements to correct.

Tier 4 PSu, might want to exchange it out...

It's a raidmax. It doesn't matter what tier the raidmax is. Just don't buy raidmax.

I could have saved $50 by not getting a CPU cooler and a locked i5, or spent $30 extra to get the proper motherboard. Looks like my raidmax PSU is going in the trash when I have money to buy a new PSU, don't want to risk my CPU getting fried.

I can't sell a used i5 and downgrade because I'd just be losing money...

My best bet is to trash the PSU, upgrade my motherboard, and the one I have now as used, but could be difficult to sell a motherboard. I'd be looking at maybe $70 of losses (PSU and selling used motherboard).

yeah, as mentioned, the build isn't bad; just not ideal choices. I wouldn't bother with the replacement of the motherboard either as by the time you'd need to overclock to stay competitive, skylake or newer will be out.

The power supply is pretty much the only thing I'd say to change for now.
