Description

Wanted a compact, unobtrusive, future-resistant set up for a 3 monitor, stand up workstation I use for work. Did not want to have to think about upgrading for another 4 to 5 years. I wish I could stick with Windows 7 but... the future beckons.

Will add a gaming graphics card in the future once prices are not stupid. For now a three head productivity adapter is sufficient and I don't feel like I'm paying too much for too little.

Added a Blu-Ray burner (with a 4 year warranty) because I like to burn the occasional CD or video disk.

Used for web development on virtual machines (Drupal/Vagrant) and content authoring (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, etc.).

Part Reviews

CPU

Ordered from Newegg as a part of a bundle with the MB and RAM.

Motherboard

Ordered from Newegg as a part of a bundle with the CPU and RAM. It has all the features I need and the build went easily. Maybe could have used better documentation on the ATX 12V connection.

Memory

Ordered from Newegg as a part of a bundle with the CPU and MB. I'm not planning on overclocking but I'd appreciate if you could talk me out of it in the comments and link me to a how-to.

Storage

Ordered from OutletPC. Tiny and fast.

Video Card

Ordered from B&H Photo. Cheapest, new 3 head video card for a work station that isn't doing any gaming. Installed without a hitch using the software from nvidia's web site. Seems to be adequate for content authoring and web development.

Case

Order from B&H Photo. Very happy with the final result and how small the package is. Although I have very little recent experience with PC building I'm pretty sure that you're not going to get much smaller with a mATX case. The PSU fan and the Wraith overlap a bit and are pretty close so I'm not sure how well it would cool someone who wants to fly hot. I'm not planning on overclocking but I'd appreciate if you could talk me out of it in the comments and link me to a how-to.

Power Supply

Ordered from Newegg. Not being a seasoned builder I'm not sure if it's normal to have so much cable to have to stow on a PSU like this. I suppose it's better to have too much rather than the alternative.

Optical Drive

Ordered from Newegg. Installed my Windows DVD without a hitch. Will update after I have a chance to try out some burns.

Operating System

Ordered from Outlet PC, with reservations. Came in an official looking package with the serial key under a scratch off. Installed with no issue.

so did you try some burns? win7 might be doable, but no more updates in 2 years

the psu is quite overkill, though you may end up using a high end gfx card on it later

Is the GT 710 working ok with Windows 10?

Yes, absolutely. Installed it and never had to do anything to make it work with 3 monitors.
