Description

Greetings fellow PC building enthusiasts!

This is another build that was born from older parts lying around in my closet, needed to get rid of them and decided these would all pair together pretty well. I'm hoping to sell it locally after the holidays for cheaper than I built it for so that someone new to PC Gaming can get a decent entry level rig for a good price!

It started with the GPU, I had a spare 560ti (as a bonus) from a Reddit Hardwareswap deal and built the rest of the computer around that. I had an Athlon 860k but decided on the similar (but less powerful) Athlon 845 to match the performance of the 560ti a bit better. Additionally, I'm saving the 860K for a different build and pairing with an R9 280 so stay tuned for that!

There was a sick deal over Black Friday for Hyper 212 Evos, snagged 2 of them for 19.99 each and one of them went in this build. I added the two yellow led fans to match the accents on the GPU/MOBO, I put one on the CPU cooler and one at the back of the case for exhaust. I used the one stock fan that comes with the case as an intake and put a second spare generic 120mm in the front for intake as well. The only part in this build that was more than $50 was the RAM, I wanted to have 8GB and I wanted it to match the "Yellow/Black" theme I had going on lol

There's not much to say about everything else... The MOBO was bought cheap on eBay months ago (for no reason other than the fact that I hoard PC parts), the PSU is 80+ bronze and from EVGA so it's been fine, the case is a great deal for anyone looking for mATX form factor on the cheap (it even has a side window) and the HDD is a cheap Hitachi 1TB 7200 RPM drive because at this price point an SSD was hard to rationalize.

I've run some benchmarks and they've been surprisingly good for hardware this old, it should be a great PC for someone starting out in the PC gaming world at 1080p. It's not too loud either, the Apevia fans have built in rubber mounts that help with noise. It's a pretty nice looking PC too, not crazy flashy but I feel like it has a nice aesthetic to it.

Thanks for checking out the build, feel free to post any questions/comments and I'll reply to the ones I can! =) -Brandon

Edit: Added Bumble Bee to the title as per Jinx83 and my wife's suggestions lol

Perfectly capable little system for those with limited budgets. I have been producing similar spare part/eBay builds with ivy bridge i3's and A8 processors paired with gtx 660's.

For sure, it definitely performs admirably for having a GPU that's almost 6 years old lol

Also, good on you for doing those eBay builds as well, it's surprisingly rewarding! I'm actually going to be doing a build very similar to your "Raven" build pretty soon (with an i3-4160 instead of an i3-4170 though) and I wanted to know how well it performs with the R9-380.

Thanks!

The Haswell i3 and R9-380 or GTX 960 are a surprisingly good pairing, I have not had any complaints from the guy who purchased it off me. Certainly keeps up with latest titles, with the caveat that you need to optimise graphical settings.

i have an i3 4170 and a gtx 1050ti which outperforms the r9 380 by a little bit and im very happy with the performance it gives me

According to all known laws of aviation,

there is no way a bee should be able to fly.

Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground.

The bee, of course, flies anyway

because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

Uh huh, you know what it is

Those fans look great, how do they perform?

  • 2 points

♫ Everything I do, I do it biiiig ♫

They're not bad at all, pretty quiet and they perform a little bit better than generic fans lol The CPU manages to stay at 32C Idle and 68C under load but tat might be due to the lower voltage/clockspeed of the Athlon 845 vs something like an Athlon 860K.

Thank you! I'm going to try and take some screenshots of the benchmarks I ran soon, it's not a bad little rig!

Thank you! I've actually been trying to clear out my closet after a year or two of collecting used computer parts so It's kind of a win-win lol It makes a new PC Gamer happy and it makes my wife happy because there's less clutter in the house!

But can it run crysis?

Good question! I'll see if I can load up any of the Crysis games just to test it out!

Sweet budget build. I always like builds like this more than expensive battlestations. Nice work!

  • 2 points

Thanks a lot! I feel like budget builds with older hardware are a really good way to save money for first time builders. People might be surprised at how little you really NEED to spend to get decent gaming performance lol

should have called it bumble bee :0

  • 1 point

Good idea! I was thinking about going with that but I remember seeing a few "Bumble-Bee" titled builds on here earlier so I figured I'd stick with a generic name lol

Great build! Yellow is my favorite color! :D Btw I really like that Athlon I have one myself and its really snappy for the price

Thank you! And I totally agree with you on the CPU, it's surprising how underrated the CPU's for the FM2+ platform are!

It's actually very hard to find the exact parts to build a black and yellow themed PC! :O Noice.

  • 1 point

Thanks a lot! Yeah, there are some higher end parts like the MSI M-Power MOBO that I see popping up sometimes but they're definitely out of a "budget" price-range lol

Very sweet. That yellow is the best. I would like to see some more yellow. I really enjoy seeing older parts getting some glory again. They are still useful for sure.

Thanks a bunch! It was loads of fun to build and seeing the end result is gratifying since I didn't really spend a lot of money on it, definitely a surprisingly rewarding build!

I'm diggin the yellow lights. Nice change from the the usual red, blue white, etc

Thanks a lot! I totally agree, not that I'm burnt out on other color schemes but I think it's cool to mix things up sometimes lol

This is a prime example of how nice a PC build you can still make with old parts.

Hi, nice build! The Corsair 88R case’s specification states that the maximum height of CPU cooler it will accommodate is 150mm, however the Hyper 212 is supposed to be more than this, even pcpartpicker says the two are incompatible, obviously your build has both, can you confirm the cooler fitted OK?

  • 1 point

I can confirm it fits! It was tight but the side-panel definitely fits, I've seen other people with this CPU Cooler/Case combo before as well lol

  • 2 points

Yeah I have seen a few on here, and so I’m pretty confident it will, was just concerned by the official measurements and specs saying they’re incompatible! Thanks.

560ti seems rather outdated compared to today's "standards"

Any Benchmarks or Avg. Performance tests yet? Would love to see how this little yellow beast performs!

  • 2 points

Performance wise I'm pretty sure it scores about a half of the gtx 960

  • 2 points

It's definitely an older card (I think it was released in 2011?) but from what I saw in Ungine Heaven/Valley and 3D Mark it still holds it's own when paired with a decent CPU! I'll take some screenshots soon with the results =)

  • 1 point

But that card tho if it was a 2gb card would have been better

  • 1 point

I definitely agree, luckily it still does pretty well for what it is though! I've used 1GB GDDR5 cards a few times in the past few months and they've always blown away my expectations. The GTX 460, GTX 560ti and HD 6870 have all been pretty good little cards despite their age and technical specifications lol

  • 1 point

Oh damn! how much was the gpu?

  • 1 point

The GPU actually was actually a bonus on a HardwareSwap deal I made a while back, so technically it was free but I just put $50 because that was about the price of the motherboard that I purchased with it lol

ok cool

What's that motherboard like

Hey I have a gtx 560 ti and was looking to upgrade from my A10 6700 to the 845. Do you think this is a good idea from your test? Thanks. (I also have a slight overclock to the 560)

For 468 dollars, you could've built a PC with Intel i3 6100 and RX 460 or nVidia GTX 1050 Ti...

  • 1 point

Not quite brother, even with a lower wattage PSU, no aftermarket CPU cooler, a cheaper case and no extra case fans the cheapest I could manage is about $540. You have to take into consideration the fact that my build included Windows 10 for about $90 lol Additionally, the objective of this build wasn't to buy all new parts to get the best price/performance at a sub $500 price-point. The objective was to get rid of some of the parts that I had in my closet so it makes sense that I didn't throw an LGA 1151 CPU/MOBO with DDR4 RAM and a brand new AMD card.

Thanks for the comment though!

P.S. Here's a link to the cheapest 6100/RX 460 Build I could make, feel free to try and get the price tag lower! https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7cWBzM

I didn't really mean it, it was a joke, but my build was still cheaper than 470 dollars. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZjBDQV

Nice try but it looks like your build is still $490 and that's BEFORE the operating system, which I paid $90 for lol If you subtract the operating system from my Yellow Used Parts Build it's still significantly cheaper at $380, thanks for the comment though!

China is full with those, can be picked up for about any color for 3$ lol

Ooh where'd you find them? I never thought to go to something like Alibaba for computer parts lol.

  • 1 point

In china we buy stuff like pc parts from taobao, fans like these can range anywhere from 1$ to 8$ http://m.intl.taobao.com/detail/detail.html?id=533227358784 Its china only, however you might be able to find some using aliexpress or maybe amazon can have some as well. Even things like the rgb mousepads (like the ones from corsair and razer) are sold for like 13$ http://m.intl.taobao.com/detail/detail.html?id=542348716182 Lol i own one and it works totally fine, sure these are flat out knockoffs but who cares, you pay about 40$ less for nearly the same product :D

  • 1 point

Yeah and they were cheap too! They came in a pack of 3 on Newegg for about $15 but I couldn't find them on PCPartpicker for whatever reason so I added the closest thing lol
