Home Server OS & software

Hi, I am building and setting up a home storage server (for my pictures and other data). Which Operating System should I use? I am debating between Linux or windows. Also, what other software should I install on the home server? I am considering a firewall for my network and backup software.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is a bit old, but still has the basics of what you need for setting up a Ubuntu homeserver: https://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-home-fileserver

I would try linux out first since its free, and if you don't like it/can't figure out than go ahead and use Windows. That said if you've never used linux, you're due a proper warning: https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/cautionary.png
