Description

Theme

This build follows a striking black and white color aesthetics. In light of that, a number of part selection decisions were influenced in pursuit of this aesthetic, while impacting cost and performance as little as possible.

CPU and Cooler

The R7 1700 is an octa-core processor that utilizes AMD SMT technology for a total of sixteen threads. This model has the best price for performance of the R7 CPUs, and like the rest of the R7 CPUs, the 1700 is overclockable. To make the most of the overclockability, we're adding the Deepcool CAPTAIN 240EX WHITE 240mm liquid cooler, which will really let you push the CPU.

Motherboard

We're using a parametric selection of X370 ATX motherboards. This will allow for both SLI or Crossfire graphics card setups. If you only plan to use a single GPU, you may consider looking into B350 motherboards instead – both X370 and B350 support CPU overclocking. The parametric selection will actively choose the best-priced motherboard of the group. Additionally, they all have 4 DDR4 DIMM slots, 6-8 SATA ports, and PCIE/NVME capable m.2 slots. All of the selected motherboards have video outputs but these will only work with the upcoming Ryzen APUs as the R7 processors do not have onboard graphics.

Memory

For memory, we're filtering for the best-priced 2x8GB kit of DDR4 RAM with a heatsink. We've limited it to DDR4-2800 and DDR4-3000 as Ryzen CPUs scale well with higher frequency memory. At the current time, using memory rated over 3000mhz is not advised without doing extra research as DIMM support can be hit or miss. AMD is working on releasing additional BIOS updates to add better compatibility for higher frequency memory. Feel free to click the "From parametric filter" link to see the various options and pick a color that suits your part list.

Storage

We're also using a parametric filter that will actively select the best-priced SSD of roughly 500GB capacity. Additionally, we're including a 3TB mechanical hard drive in a parametric filter for things like storing media and extra games. Everyone's storage needs differs, so feel free to change the capacity to your heart's desire.

GPU

Our GPU is the very popular GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. This is currently one of the fastest single GPU video cards in the market - you may want to look into a 120-144Hz and/or 2560x1440 resolution monitor for this bad boy. The parametric filter is set for the best-priced 1080 Ti available, but feel free to click the "From parametric filter" link to browse our listing of 1080s Tis. For those interested in VR, the GTX 1080 Ti will have no problem playing any and and all applications currently on the market.

Case

All of our parts are housed in the gorgeous white and black Phanteks P400S Tempered Glass edition. This ATX mid tower case features a tempered glass window to show off the starkly contrasted black and white internals. Speaking of white internals, this case has white PSU shroud to hide any unsightly cables, and it conveniently matches our color scheme perfectly. It also features 2 USB 3.0 front panel ports, can fit pretty much any length video card, and has 2x 3.5" and 2x 2.5" bays.

You may also wish to check out the version of this case where the front is white and the PSU shroud is black.

PSU

Powering the build is a sparse selection of some of the most well-reviewed PSUs available - all without breaking the bank. All of them are certified 80+ Gold and fully-modular.

Compatibility Notes

  • The Deepcool - CAPTAIN 240EX WHITE 153.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the Biostar - X370GT5 ATX AM4 Motherboard.
  • The Phanteks - ECLIPSE P400S TEMPERED GLASS ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 395mm long, but video cards over 280mm may block drive bays. Since the Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB AORUS Video Card is 293mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.
  • Flag compatibility notes as incorrect

Nothing "magnificent" about that BIOSTAR motherboard your parametric filter is sometimes showing. It is a 3-star, buggy and unstable mess.

rmichaels213 2 points 5 days ago

Noticed the same. Would have to switch out the motherboard if I were to go this route.

Hifihedgehog 2 points 5 days ago

Just as note to the author @ThoughtA , I am apologize if I came off a bit harsh or ungrateful. On the contrary, your guides have been incredibly helpful for me in getting a lay of the land in building my small form factor system. I just wanted to point out that the BIOSTAR motherboard your parametric search is pulling up is notorious in the reviews and in the forums to be a DOA or glitchy board. Just a buyer's beware warning is all I was making. YMMV. :)

What fps does this run at

insakna 3 points 19 days ago

many

wastedfate 1 point 8 days ago

60 FPS @ 4K. Just don't forget to add a $300+ 4K monitor, which pushes the budget into 2000.

HeightOfFolly 1 point 4 days ago

Yes

insakna 1 point 19 days ago

Nice build, but I wouldn't mind a price on the cooler and case.

ThoughtA staff submitter 1 point 19 days ago

You may wish to check your user preferences page to see if you have any retailers disabled. If they're all enabled and you still aren't seeing prices, would you mind letting me know which country version of the site you're using?

Supersahen 1 point 18 days ago

Australian retailers don't have pricing for the CPU Cooler

insakna 1 point 11 days ago

Ah, looks like I had every retailer disabled except for Amazon, haha. Thanks.

I am so torn between the Ryzen 5 1600 and the Ryzen 1700, any advice? Just gaming while watching a stream?

Remendador 2 points 13 days ago

I don't stream my gameplay, but I record my gameplay. I have an R5 1600 @3.9GHz + X370 + GTX 1060 + 16GB 2400MHz RAM. It just doesn't bother if it's recording or not. Great cpu imho. I really don't recommend R7 for a gaming rig, save that money and put it where it matters, gpu. I'd only recommend R7 for productivity machines. Please, check benchmarks and you won't regret choosing the 1600.

jessej 1 point 16 days ago

How would this compare to having the 1700x instead?

Remendador 1 point 13 days ago

If you manually overclock they perform pretty much the same. Plus, the 1700X doesn't come with a cooler, at least it didn't the last time I checked.

joshuafait@gmail.com 1 point 15 days ago

Great build. I'm looking to do something very similar. How loud are the fans on this cooler? A friend bought the h110i and it's extremely loud.

termat 1 point 13 days ago

Is there a way to parametric that excludes mini cards?

ThoughtA staff submitter 2 points 13 days ago

If you click the "From parametric filter" link in the part list, you can load up a category view that already includes the parametric filter's options. If you set the minimum length on that page to be, say, 224mm, mini cards will be excluded. You then click the "Add From Filter" link in the top rightish of the page to add the new filter. This is an example of the settings I'm talking about (including the minimum length).

SuleimanGD 1 point 13 days ago

Are these parts fully compatible with each other ??

ThoughtA staff submitter 1 point 13 days ago

Yep!

csalguero10 1 point 10 days ago

What about the compatibility note on the DeepCool?

The Deepcool - CAPTAIN 240EX WHITE 153.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the Biostar - X370GT5 ATX AM4 Motherboard.

Does it require a separate mounting adapter or does it fit the Motherboard as is?

don't know why you would put a blower style card in this case.

ChrisDaDerp 1 point 11 hours ago

Which is better, the Intel or AMD build? I need a new computer to be able to play VR. Both are capable, obviously, but if I got a really good monitor, which would be better?

iballisticfish11 -14 points 18 days ago

no amd build is magnificent

No, it's basically just a higher TDP and higher clocked R7 1700, not worth the upprice.
