Great AMD Gaming Build

CPU

At this budget, we're using the AMD Ryzen 5 2600. The R5 2600 includes a stock cooler, so a 3rd-party cooler isn't necessary. Since we aren't overclocking our CPU, the stock cooler will be sufficient in keeping temperatures acceptable.

Motherboard

We're using a parametric filter to constantly select the best-priced motherboard while meeting selected criteria. In this case, we are filtering for ATX B450 chipsets and up to 4 DDR4 DIMM slots for future expansion. The compatibility engine will filter out anything not compatible with the build, and it will automatically update with the best priced option as prices change.

Memory

For our memory, the parametric filter finds the best price on 16GB kits of memory that are within AMD’s recommended specifications. We've limited it to DDR4-3000 and faster speeds, as Ryzen CPUs scale well with higher frequency memory.

Storage

We're use parametric filters to incorporate an SSD with at least 500GB of space. We have also added a parametric filter for a 2TB mechanical drive for mass storage, such as extra games and videos. Everyone's storage needs differs, so feel free to add or remove capacity to your heart's desire.

GPU

For our GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 is one of the best price for performance cards on the market and an absolute powerhouse. The GTX 1070 will provide a consistent 60fps on many demanding games like PUBG) at Ultra at 1080p, and even 1440p for some games like Shadow of War. It'll also handle Fortnite with zero issues. For those interested in VR, the GTX 1070 will have no problem playing any and and all applications currently on the market.

To keep the noise and temperatures down, we've updated the filter to include a minimum length to avoid "mini" versions of the card, which prioritize fitting into small builds, such as an ITX case. You can choose to use this filter instead, if you want to include the smaller cards for any reason. Note that smaller cards will be louder or hotter - or both.

Case

Our build will be housed in the black NZXT H500. This case features a tempered glass window and 2x front panel USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. It can fit full length video cards and features a PSU shroud to keep your build looking cleaner. The H500 also contains quite a bit of cable management features, such as cutouts, bumps and tie-offs.

You can find white, black/blue, and black/red versions of the H500 as well.

PSU

For our power supply, we're using a parametric selection of well-reviewed semi or fully modular units, all of which are 80+ Gold certified or above and can provide plenty of power for this build.

Protips: Step 1: Next time you go to the United States on vacation, grab an extra suitcase. Step 2: Buy all your parts. Make sure the PSU is compatible with your country's voltage. You can either build there or wait. Step 3: If you did build the PC there use insta-pack while taking it back home. (Like NZXT in their BLD computers when you first unbox you see the expanded foam stuff) Step 4: Buy a 3 pronged computer cable from your local country for your power supply. Step 5: Profit?

It's because you decided to buy RAM when it was expensive and paid $90 for those Corsair fans. Next time, see how prices are trending and spend money on improving the quality of your parts rather than the looks. I'm not saying buying the fans or expensive RAM was a bad idea, just you could have gotten much better performance out of the same budget if you hadn't decided to buy them.

Almost too many to choose was my problem. Figure out your priority and budget first and narrow down from there.

I was <$100, and quiet with no windows: so picked the Corsair 100R Silent Edition in the end.

Was the last thing I ordered for the build as couldn't decide....

The RAM will probably be able to run at 2666MHz, which is fast enough for most people, and you might even be able to overclock it a little to run at 3200MHz if you get lucky. Fortunately, second generation Ryzen processors and motherboards are compatible with more types and speeds of RAM than the first generation.

"99% of people will not run into an issue where the difference between bottlenecking your GPU is due to an insufficient CPU cooler."

The only time a bad CPU cooler would affect performance is when the CPU gets hot enough to thermal throttle performance, making the CPU run at lower speeds than normal so it's not able to send data to the GPU fast enough. This CPU and stock cooler is perfectly fine, and even if it does thermal throttle a little, which it shouldn't at stock speeds, there still shouldn't be any, or very little, drop in GPU performance.

Im a rookie when it comes to PC building. I recently built a PC with these parts and after it was all put together the fans spin and the mobo lights up but I dont get a display. I've been at it for days looking up everything I can, ive unplugged everything and replugged them. still no display. Is there any solutions you guys would recommend?

Im using the hdmi port for the display if that matters at all

  1. Are you plugged into the graphics card or the motherboard? Since the 2600 isn’t an APU, the motherboard won’t give out any display.

  2. Are all your storage drives plugged in all the way? Each SATA interface needs both a power cable and a cable connecting it to the motherboard.

  3. Is your ram seated correctly? It takes a lot more force than you might think.

  4. Does the motherboard have diagnostic LEDs on it? If so, check the manual to see what they mean.

I had the same thing. Turns out that the case was blocking the connection by literally a hairs width when it was plugging in, so the cable wasn't plugged in all the way. Also don't forget about motherboeard standoffs. And if you haven't already, try to build it first outside of the case.

It wouldn’t. You really shouldn’t be worrying about bottlenecking GPU performance with any CPUs that have 4 or more cores, regardless of hyperthreading or multithreading. You should be able to use a GTX 1080 to its full extent.

Sadly, not always the case. I have a FX-8320 and a GTX 1060. I have a friend with the same GPU but he has an i7-6700k, he gets 150% more frames than I.

Oops! I meant to say any recent quad core CPU. Obviously, the FX-8320 and i7-6700k are very different when it comes to performance, even though they are both considered quad core CPUs (although the 8320 technically has 8 cores).

A third party cooler for what? The CPU won’t need a third party cooler to be able to run a GTX 1080 because the cooler only affects CPU temps, and most GPU stock coolers are decent enough that the only reason you would upgrade is for aesthetics.

As far as the PSU, the one on the list should be fine, because the GTX 1080 has a TDP of 180W, only 10W higher than the GTX 1070 on the list.

So you are saying the stock cooler for the CPU is sufficient to run the GTX 1080.

So really, you could just switch out the 1070 for the 1080 and nothing else really needs to be changed. Interesting...Thanks

99% of people will not run into an issue where the difference between bottlenecking your GPU is due to an insufficient CPU cooler. Even with a current generation 8th gen i3, you are unlikely to have exorbitant bottlenecking. Looking at your build right now in your saved part list, you have a great looking build for someone looking for a low maintenance long term gaming build.

Only thing I can say is you'll need a game drive, and you can save money on your GPU and PSU by finding a bundle here.

Actually, the 580 and 1060 6GB perform very similarly. While the 1060 is still better, they’re close enough that the 580 is a better buy due to its lower cost, ~$50-100 right now depending on the model.

If it’s just for stock trading, maybe look at cheaper prebuilt systems rather than making your own. It’ll take the hassle out of trying to find compatible parts and building the system. This list is more of a guide for gaming PCs, so unless you’re gaming a lot you don’t need a ton of power.

It shouldn’t, unless you’re running multiple games at once. Displaying a screen take a lot less GPU power than rendering an environment or anything a game does. In my current PC I’m running dual monitors on an older GPU with no problems.

Really it can handle 3 1440p monitors with this GPU. I have a 1070ti and it runs 2 1440p monitors fine. As long as you have a GPU that pushes 60fps on your main screen in a game your other screens will run just fine if you have enough DP connectors (on a 1070 you have 3 so you’d be perfectly fine)

When you OC your RAM beyond its rated speed you, also usually increase your cas latency. So the 3000mhz kit OC'd to 3200mhz will probably also have its CL increased from 16 to 17, where as the 3200mhz kit should be able to run that speed without an increase in its CL. The difference in gaming performance will probably only be a frame or two, but it's still a difference.

And there is like a very small chance you’d notice it since 1 or 2 frames is within margin of error, so I’d be surprised if there would even be a benchmark score decrease. Increasing the speed of the ram would result in a performance increase that is small, but more than what you'd loose to higher CL. Otherwise people wouldn’t oc ram.

Noob here: Will I be able to plug my LG 27" 4k monitor into this via display port? I have a mac too and want to be able to use the LG for both, just switching it from the PC to the mac.

Also, I may get a second, smaller monitor for web/etc browsing while playing. Should be fine?

Also, I'll likely use ethernet but may need to use the 5Ghz Wifi sometimes. Will this work or do I need a wifi adapter? If so any recommendations? Cat7 cable will be fine here?

Another super noob question - I don't have a keyboard. Will need to buy one separately? Figured so but just making sure.

Have some details.

Just FYI, the GTX 1070, while still a very good card, might have some trouble at 4K, so don’t forget about turning down game resolution if it becomes unplayable.

Multi-display setups are awesome, and should only affect performance an extremely minimal amount, if at all.

It depends on what you use your PC for and how fast your internet is. Personally, I’d recommend running on Ethernet the whole time, but if you really need WiFi capability, go for a cheapish PCIe WiFi card. I have a $35 ASUS one that has both WiFi and Bluetooth on it, so I can use my controller without having to plug it in. For cables, unless you have faster than gigabit networking, Cat5e will be plenty, so anything newer will just be for future proofing.

You’ll need a separate keyboard. If you’re going to be using your rig a lot for extended periods of time (although it’s just a better idea to get one anyways), I would very highly recommend a mechanical keyboard. If you can’t afford the premium for a high end one from Corsair or some other company, take a look around and see what people suggest. I have an e-element Z88 (I think anyways) mechanical keyboard. Don’t forget to also get a mouse and mouse pad!

I saw the comment below about the motherboard only having one fan connector. Since the motherboard listed would take such a long time to ship to me, I splurged and got the Aorus Gaming Motherboard B450 Pro WiFi instead. It has at least two fan connectors, so I was surprised to read the original mobo had only one.

I'm a little confused about the fans included with the case, because they have three-pin connectors and the motherboard fan pins are four pins each. They have a tiny piece of plastic above the right three pins, however, so I just stuck them on that way and left the 4th pin on the motherboard open.

I've assembled everything so far and I'm just waiting on the processor to arrive today. The case is pretty neat in how it allows you to manage your cables and how it provides you with different mounting options for the hard drives.

I'm also a little confused by the RAM placement. There are four slots for RAM; I'm not sure if you have to place the memory in specific slots in order for it to work correctly so I just placed the RAM in the two right-hand slots (if you're looking through the tempered glass at your build). The manual as usual wasn't the greatest so I'm hoping this will work.

If there's anyone out there who reads this and knows that I'm going to blow up my rig as soon as I power it on the first time, I'd be much obliged for your technical know-how at this point. Thanks guys! Hope you're all good!

You're on the right track so far! That plastic bit is a "key" to make you plug the 3-pin fan into the correct 3 pins of the 4-pin connector. You are, indeed, supposed to leave one of the 4 pins open in your case.

You'll want to check your motherboard manual for RAM installation. It will tell you which slots to plug in to enable dual-channel.

Use a x370 or 470 chipset board please! Not OCing a perfectly overclockable chip with a capable cooler is not a great PPD in my opinion. If you cheap out on the mobo you won’t get some features of other higher end ones not to meantion overclocking.

I bought the CPU, MOBO, and RAM from this guide. The problem I have is that when I put the memory in the Dual Channel slots, Windows 10 show 16 GB (only 7.95 usable). If I put the RAM in the adjacent slots and run it single channel, then Windows 10 shows 16 GB. I have no idea why its doing this, I tried different memory and it still had this problem. I tried to enable XMP but the computer would not boot up. It won't even go into BIOS, I had to remove the battery to reset. Is there something I'm missing here?

I've been putting together this build and am getting an UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP error when I try to install Windows 10 Pro from a flash drive. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing it? Maybe a bad motherboard? Looking around online the only relevant tip that I could find was that faulty memory could cause the error. I tried both of my memory modules individually and got the same results.

Your CPU might not be playing well with the memory. If you’ve tinkered with the bios, try resetting it and see if it makes a difference. If not, try reseating the CPU. If that still doesn’t work, you might need to return the memory and get a different pack.

x470 mainly has better power delivery for higher and more stable overclocks, but they also tend to have more fan headers, more usb headers, and more sata connections, a better bios with more overclocking features. But the main difference is better overclocking and more robust bios.

Noob here. I may need a wifi for our current setup in our apartment. With that, should I buy a different motherboard with wifi or just a wifi adapter? If motherboard with wifi, what would you recommend on this build? if wifi adapter, anything particular? Using it for gaming (primary) and work/other stuff like excel, visio, photoshop, vegas pro (secondary).

If you can, try running an Ethernet cable from your router to your motherboard. That’ll get you the lowest latency. If you can’t, buy a cheapish PCIe WiFi adapter like this one, which I had running on my system till I switched over to Ethernet.

It's a valid alternative, but I wouldn't call it objectively better. The list you've linked has a weaker CPU, slower RAM, and less storage.

The 1500X is slower than the 2600. I recommend looking up benchmarks that include both. You may be confusing clock speed as the only way to measure CPU performance, but 1GHz on one CPU is not necessarily the same performance as 1GHz as another.

If your part list had the same amount of storage as the guide's, it'd cost £95 more than the guide's. It wouldn't simply be a trade for slower storage. It would cost significantly more. Even without having as much storage, it still costs £45 more.

Adding in a GTX 1080 is a great benefit, but you have to recognize the tradeoffs when you do such a thing. It's very important to do so when comparing part lists.

The RAM is faster now, but this new part list still has a slower CPU, still has less solid state storage and less mechanical storage, and still costs more. It also still has a better GPU than the guide's.

It's still a good built. All I'm trying to convey to you is that you can't do something like halve (or more) the storage and claim the build is objectively better.

Also in my first comment i messed up. i meant yours had a better cpu and was better for productivity but because of the GTX 1080 mine was better for gaming as the cpu is less important in games.

While it might be better for your budget, it definitely isn’t as powerful. The Radeon RX 580, which is one of the best price to performance cards on the market, gets trumped by the much more powerful GTX 1070. While they have the same amount of VRAM, the 1070’s higher number of shader units and special NVIDIA architecture allows it to have substantially higher performance than the RX 580. Supposedly though, Radeon cards play more nicely with AMD CPUs than with Intel, but I haven’t had any experience with this.

I agree with your assessment. I value the addition of NVMe, BT, Wifi, faster RAM for the same price with only a 5% GPU overall hit. Add to this freesync support and the value increases. Great performance at 1080p, 60Hz. Just my opinion. I think it would be a very interesting test to head to head these 2 builds in several gaming benchmarks and take the average and see how far apart they are. Would 200mhz in ram speed and NVMe drive have any affect at all on gaming performance? Real data vice opinions would be very interesting.

It has a significantly worse PSU, a NVME drive that is of little to no benefit for a gaming build, it has a much worse GPU, it has less storage too. All while costing more.

Have you plugged the GPU all the way in? Checked cables and connectors? CPU seated correctly? plugged the videocable into the GPU?

It definitely should be. Depending on what you’re streaming and what type of encoding you’re using, you might be able to get 1080p 60fps. I have this CPU paired with a GTX 970 and I’m easily able to stream games like Borderlands 2 at those speeds while using x256 CPU encoding.

Unless you want 4k gaming i think 1060 6gb should do the job. Also you could save in 8 gb of ram and use a smaller ssd for the OS and a 1tb for storage. Using an intel i5 or i3 8 series would make you need lower speed ram too. even a lower ryzen would probably work too. I cant think what kind of game would benefit from this kind of build though.

For extra storage. SSD is good for using as a boot drive, and for your favorite apps and games, but it's extra speed is wasted if you use it to save movies, pictures, word docs or install files. It's a good idea to download a program installer to your hdd, then install it to your ssd.

The build is great. I have no complaint at all, and I even feel a little bit jealous.

This is my similar build and as you can see, for roughly the same price, you got a better video card. This is partly due to my decision to go with more expensive RGB RAM, Case, Motherboard, a needed Wi-Fi adapter and a MicroATX build which sometimes can be more expensive.

My reason of choice for the mobo was temps. I watched a video comparing different B450 ATX mobos and I got scared with the Asus and Gigabyte temps. Asrock was okaish and MSI mobos came with the best temps. Got me sold on the brand.

I spent about $138 more on those components. I however have no regrets. The RX 580 came with a promotion gift of 3 games worth $150, elevating the value rate of the card to $379 from the $229 I got it for.

No. Not in any way shape or form is a 580 better than a 1070. http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1070-vs-AMD-RX-580/3609vs3923 The 1070 is 54% better than a 1070. Even though both cards have 8gb of vram, the 1070 has more cores, and a better architecture design. PPD isn’t really a consideration here as the 1070 is about the same price (a little higher) and if you’re going to be doing high end gaming, you definitely would spend the money to get undeniably better performance. There really isn’t even a viable argument for buying a 580 unless you absolutely need a card with its exact specs.

The M12II/S12II is a poor choice in PSU and is not suited for modern builds. It lacks OTP and OCP protection, it doesn't support C6/C7 power states, and it is group regulated which means during crossload the 5V rail or the 12V rail could get quite ugly or even go out of spec. Plus its known to be a loud PSU. It was a decent PSU choice in 2010 but it days have long passed.

Its doesn't support low power states although its is pennies amounts so it is just icing on top of the cake.

It is group regulated which means that it can't out put its full power on the 12V rail and the 12V/5V rail uses one coil and when the load isn't balance e.g high load on one and low on the other aka crossload it has a very hard time regulating voltage which means that voltage regulation on the 12V and 5V can get ugly or even out spec if you push the PSU hard enough.

I looked it up on johnnyguru, and it's review was very positive, scoring a 9.7 out of 10, so I believed it to be a good PSU, even though it's group regulated, and in the review they mention it's the best scoring group regulated PSU they've ever tested. However, it is a 10 year old review, and I'm not contesting your opinion, but would ask, what PSU would you recommend instead? Full or semi modular if possible.

This could get you 60FPS or more on almost all modern titles, even on high or very high settings, and is definitely future proof. It’ll probably last you the lifetime of the products before you really need to upgrade.

Visually, sure. But it also (from what we've seen) takes a pretty heavy hit on FPS. From the demo they played, games seemed to have run at no more than 40FPS when ray tracing was on... These RTX cards are amazing, but I don't think they're primarily designed for raw frame smashing gaming. People tend to overlook this.

This build will let you play on ultra settings above 60 fps for most modern titles. for how long it will last I would guess 5-8 years because of the power of the card
