Justiceinacan 7 Builds 3 points 5 months ago

Hey, not bad. No offense, but I'm kinda taken aback now comparing this build (mainly the 2012 era motherboard and RAM sticks) to modern builds, general aesthetics of PCs have changed notably in 6 years. Crazy how the market do dat.

As a former FX user I can tell you they're really not bad, but I bet it's showing it's age just like your old 760, you just might not notice it as much. You might want to plan to get off it ; I know I was having bad FPS drops on an OC'd 6300 and I'm happy that I made the switch. Regardless, if you're happy with what you have, don't let us ruin your fun.

FX CPUs aside, your build looks pretty good and you managed your cables well. Nice job! Though I would flip the AIO if it doesn't hurt your temps too much (don't bend it too sharp, the weak AIO pumps don't take well to that).

Used video card market looked pretty solid when I was shopping for one 5 weeks ago. Picked up an RX 480 8GB with a good cooler on it for $165, found a long list of other capable 1080p cards out there (multiple of the following ; Sapphire Nitro 290X, MSI Twin Frozr V 390(x), 1060 6GB Gaming X) for $100-200, as well as $250-275 980ti/1070. It'd blow your 660Tis out of the water without multi-GPU headaches.

Not to mention brand new video cards are more or less under control and are now within $40 of their MSRP.

Seems to me like the best option is AMD for Freesync in the $300 or less range, but the Vega cards are power-hungry, hotter versions of their Pascal counterparts which makes NVIDIA the more attractive option for anything above an RX 580.

Tonyhardy1999's Completed Build: Broke a$$ college student

Justiceinacan 7 Builds 3 points 5 months ago

Not bad tbh... have you considered going used for GPUs? When I was shopping I saw stuff like 290x's (yeah they're hot though) but with decent fans for around $100, 390s and 480 8GBs for $175, 1070s and 980tis for $260 and 1080s for $400 on eBay. You can keep half your dinner!

I'm interested in delidding because my 8600k has pretty cruddy temps despite me having a good heatsink on it. Anything about delidding you would advise to a newbie?

Did you glue the IHS back or are you letting your CPU cooler hold it down?

What's with the liquid electrical tape? Did you end up using that on the processor, if so, what for? Thanks!

Also your description brings on the feels :/

Not a bad choice, but are you sure you're going to need 850w? Either way the G2, G3, and RMx series are all Tier 1 on Tom's Hardware PSU list, and they all score very well on jonnyguru (IMO the best PSU reviewer). They all have 10 year warranties as well, any would work fine.

Dero7258's Completed Build: First Time for everything lol

Justiceinacan 7 Builds 2 points 6 months ago

Not bad for a first time build, I see you're already on the path to upgrading off the AM3+ platform.

To confirm your feelings that the 1080ti is being held back, you're probably correct. AMD FX is a 6 year old platform, and was notorious at launch for poor single-core performance (most games use a couple cores, but that's starting to change) when compared to it's intel counterparts, and boasted good affordable multi core performance ; however, any current gen CPUs will blow that out of the water too. I had a weaker model FX-6300 heavily overclocked for a couple years and I noticed a lot of stuttering when the CPU was getting maxed out in games, but it seems like you're doing pretty well with your 8350, so don't let me judge you too hard ¯_(ツ)_/¯ also depends on games you play.

But definitely switch out that PSU, the VS series isn't really known for being high-quality, and you don't want it to take your parts with it if it happens to die, which can happen. I suggest an EVGA Supernova G2 or G3 personally.

But yeah, the magical thing about PCs is you can change everything you want to. Keep at it!

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 6 months ago

Heh, funny story. I reassembled the reference cooler so I could fit my old RX 480 into the lower slot on my board... it works. No matter how hard I try I can't get it to work in the top.

Before I figured that out though, I already ordered an RX 480 8GB RS version off eBay for $150 including shipping. For grins and giggles I threw it in the top slot - it works there too! I have a functional RX 480 8GB crossfire.

Thanks for the help though.

Why? It's a 6 core, overclockable, brand new, highest IPC on the market CPU. How could it possibly be a bottleneck?

Now when streaming, I could understand as that can take a ton of threads depending on the quality. But I think he'll be fine for a medium quality stream, no problem.

Forum Topic "Will 4GB be enough for 1080p high/maxed for the next few years?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 6 months ago

I see you and the guy below recommending Fury or Fury X, a Sapphire Nitro Fury for $200 to be exact. I figured the high power draw would mean these cards are running quite hot... if I can find fury cards cheaper, would they be more worth it?

I don't currently own a 144hz monitor, but that's part of my upgrading budget - what's left to get [in order of priority] is a new video card since the old one broke and I would really like to play games again, a define S windowed since this HAF 912 is janky and ugly, an R1 ultimate to keep my i5 frosty under an overclock, and then a 144hz monitor.

Can you briefly explain freesync? I was also considering a 980ti for the price of a new rx580, and I know literally nothing about freesync other than it helps on AMD cards somehow.

Forum Topic "Can't find option to set primary display in ASRock Z370 Extreme4?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 6 months ago

I found it, it was in advanced mode, chipset configurations, it was the top option.

My video card was (key word, I confirmed it dead) a two year old XFX Radeon RX 480 8GB with a stock heatsink. I bought an aftermarket heatsink to apply, and I think something I did in the installation process messed it up.

The setting was already on PCIe, and I took my old GTX 460 and it worked fine in the slot.

Likewise, I put the RX 480 back into my old GA-78LMT USB3 and it did not show display. The card worked fine with the reference fan, so I attribute it to me messing up the installation.

I assume you're talking about the Arctic in this case?

Honestly I don't really care much about overclocking right now - I just want to have my card run freely at stock clocks, and all the arctic acceleros were in the same price range so I decided to go for the extreme because there's a lot of resources online for it.

This sounds dumb, but if there was room, would buying a pack of MOS-C1s and cutting them down to fit be better than nothing there? I have the tools.

Forum Topic "Lifespan for an AIO like the Corsair H60?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 7 months ago

That's pretty cool, thanks for sharing. I did the math, the longest this cooler will have to stick around in the real machine is probably until like the end of the year, so I should be fine. I'll probably cobble together an old parts machine where it'll live on, but I'll care about that less since I'll probably give it to a family member or something.

Forum Topic "Lifespan for an AIO like the Corsair H60?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

I found the video, thanks. I was thinking that (R1 Ultimate) or Dark Rock PRO 4 based on their performance and aesthetics. The awkward color of Noctua fans kinda kill it for me, and I'd pay the same price to buy the noctua and different fans versus the Dark Rock Pro 4 or R1 ultimate.

Forum Topic "Lifespan for an AIO like the Corsair H60?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

Yeah, I understand RX 480 is pretty good, but what really annoys me is the reference fan is awful. Either it throttles and keeps quiet, or I need to crank the fans (especially in the summer heat) and it's really loud, in order to get average-ish temps. It's not high priority to replace though, the CPU needs to go for sure and I'd really like to get a 144hz monitor before I step up the video card.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on spending more going for a Cryorig R1 ultimate? It's black, which would match the other components which is a bonus, but more importantly, it looks like it can stand up to a really high TDP and has performance to give larger rad AIOs a run for their money. I also heard that a fan can blow air over the VRMs which can be beneficial when overclocking, to keep them cooler.

Forum Topic "Lifespan for an AIO like the Corsair H60?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

I notice that a 280mm NZXT cooler is quite a bit more expensive than the rest. What is my money going toward?

Forum Topic "Lifespan for an AIO like the Corsair H60?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

Yeah, I heard things about deteriorating performance because the liquid slowly evaporates, all sorts of stuff about failed pumps, breaking hoses, etc. which makes me a bit nervous but it's worked fine so far. I also am aware, though, that a towering heatsink fan can bend a motherboard over time, and that would be bad.

The case I intend on eventually getting is a Define S, which'll probably roll around with the new CPU cooler (so, after a beefier video card and a 144hz monitor, so after a few months for sure) I'd like to OC pretty far, I was originally looking at a Cryorig H5 ultimate but I think I'll shell out more for an R1 ultimate, which is rated for higher TDP (gives the D15 heavy competition, would look a lot better in my case) or maybe a 280mm rad. I'm leaning towards the R1 though, as of right now.

I don't recommend it, I think you could do better if you threw a couple more hours' of work money (well, at least from my teenager point of view) into a case.

I've heard great things about the Thermaltake Core V21, I haven't used it myself. It might be a little small and certain things may not fit (see : lengthy power supplies, large CPU coolers) but I'm assuming your first build would involve a stock cooler that'll fit no problem and most average power supplies will fit as well.

Forum Topic "Will an i3-8100 be good enough to get a stable 60 again in Overwatch?"

Justiceinacan submitter 7 Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Yeah, but something I've noticed is that sometimes when the FPS drops, GPU utilization goes down and CPU does cap out at times, which leads me to think that the CPU might be at fault. I should clarify that that's average, low-action situations. When a teamfight opens up, CPU nearly caps out/ actually caps out and GPU starts lowering.

I don't even know how it works and I can tell you nothing will change by tomorrow. Weeks. Might even be months if any other votes, as you said, court cases, and finally, at least in bigger cities, making people pay for more crap won't be a competitive business strategy. Ey there, just felt like updating, I tried all your tips and nothing changed.

I bought a supernova 650w G2 for $60 on black friday, and I put it in today and I'm wowed

It turns out, the loud fan before the PSU shut off WAS the PSU fan - and it was the only majorly audible fan in the case, so something was up. I put in the supernova and my PC is whisper quiet at idle.

Cool. I was gonna put a brand new 240mm AIO on the i5 8600K upgrade I have planned and move my current H60 to the RX 480, but it's not flexible and the block isn't very compact, so I think I'll settle for an NZXT Kraken G12 if I can verify that it has the proper cooling for other things besides the core.

Yeah, sounds like something I'd do. My only concern is the traffic in Boston/Cambridge :P

To be honest, I've never done 144Hz gaming, and a new monitor is lower on my upgrade priorities list, and so far 1080p is plenty good for me.

Thanks for the advice. I'm most likely heading down today.

Edit : I can get the Ryzen 7 1700X, The B350 board, and a 16 GB Kit of Aegis for $420, or settle for a normal 8 GB stick for $350. Either way it's the less than an 8700K lol

Yeah, I consider a 240mm AIO to be minimal to run this kind of chip. It's a monster for sure.

Cjxtreme66's Completed Build: Deep Blue Something

Justiceinacan 7 Builds 2 points 16 months ago

It sounds like the build was built a while ago, but if there's a reason for it to be widely hated, it's probably that a Ryzen 5 1400 is the same CPU price, runs perfectly fine on a cheaper motherboard and has a much lower thermal output.

Either way, I second the praise. Looks great and seems to suit you well.

BUT, I must warn you, FX chip's safe thermal limit is 62 degrees, so 68 C constantly under load might cause some wear and tear!

Forum Topic "Help me pick which black friday Ryzen deal is the best for gaming"

1700X sounds like the best value ; it'll overclock itself a bit (that's basically with XFR is) if you put a good enough cooler on it, if you don't know how it's pretty nifty to boost performance. It'll also probably have better resale value a few years from now.

1800X just isn't worth the extra 50 pounds.
